    • I have been so sad about Pete–it’s hard to lose such a hero. He had a great life and made more of an impact than most people but what a voice and spirit we’ve lost.

      • It’s a wonderful song–old, learned from Huddie “Leadbelly” Ledbetter, made famous by the Weavers when Pete was with them. Sigh.

      • I don’t think anyone really knows. It’s associated with Leadbelly, who was singing it in the early 1900s, but he sang a lot of folk and blues songs that he learned from others. My guess is that it’s from the 1800s and part of the oral tradition.

      • As a child I thought of it as a song from my parent’s distant past. The sort of song that people sang at family gatherings, possibly around the piano. It was a song of oral tradition for me; not something I knew from the radio or records. So it is interesting to learn that the song may date from the 1800s.

  1. What a great shot. We have a stray who is so funny to watch getting about in the snow – after each step he lifts his paws one by one and shakes them and then takes another step and repeats the shaking; and the look on his little face is just precious.
